Englewood Mission & Beliefs

LOVE GOD

We believe that our calling to “Love God” is in response to our understanding of God and His love for us, as well as the scriptural teaching to do so. We thus confess our faith in God and in his Holy Bible.

We believe in one holy, loving, and Sovereign God, eternally existing in three persons: the everlasting Father; His one and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the Holy Spirit, the Lifegiver, who are of one substance, equal in power and glory, and who are worthy of the same worship, love, confidence, and obedience.

We believe that God has manifested Himself and His truth in the created order, in the Scriptures, and ultimately in Jesus Christ. We believe that God has spoken in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, through the words of human authors.

As the inspired Word of God, the Bible, which is fully truthful and the only infallible guide in faith and practice, is the complete revelation of His will for salvation, and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavor should be judged. Therefore, it is to be believed in all it teaches, obeyed in all it requires, and trusted in all it promises.

LOVE PEOPLE

We believe that our calling to “Love People” is in response to our understanding of humanity, sin, and the salvation provided for people in the person and work of Jesus Christ. We thus confess our beliefs regarding the creation of men and women in God’s image, in the fall of humanity into sin, and in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing by His spoken Word and for His glory. We believe that God directly created Adam and Eve, the historical parents of the entire race who were created in His own image, distinct from all other living creatures, and in a state of original righteousness, but through disobedience, they fell from their sinless state when tempted by Satan.

In union with Adam, human beings, the man Jesus Christ alone being excepted, are sinners by nature and by choice in thought, word, and deed. Therefore, humans are alienated from God and under His wrath. Only through God’s saving work in Jesus Christ can people be rescued, reconciled, and renewed.

We believe in the full humanity and deity of our Lord Jesus Christ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. We believe He lived a sinless life.

We believe in His miracles, in His representative, substitutionary, and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His present ministry for His people as Lord of all, High Priest, and Advocate.

SERVE THE WORLD

We believe that our calling to “Serve the World” is in response to the work of the Holy Spirit in God’s people who await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. We therefore confess our faith in the Holy Spirit, the Church, and God’s plan to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His glory.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, who glorifies the Lord Jesus in all that He does, who indwells and gives life to believers, who enables them to understand the Scriptures, and who empowers, equips, and guides them for service, witness, and godly living. We believe that salvation involves the redemption of the whole person and is offered freely to all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, accepting and trusting in Him alone for justification and eternal life. Justification is God’s gracious declaration of the righteousness of sinners, who believe in Christ, from all sin, through the satisfaction that Christ has made. Believers are also regenerated by God’s Word and Holy Spirit dwelling in them. Sanctification is the process of progressing toward moral and spiritual maturity, enabled by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Those who are accepted in Christ and sanctified by the Holy Spirit will never totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace but shall persevere to the end and be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, which is composed of all His true disciples. The true Church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of immersed believers, and whose officers are pastors and deacons. We believe that the Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, both of which visibly express the gospel.

We believe the responsibility of Christ’s people in this world is to be God’s redeemed community, embodying His love by worshiping God with praise, prayer, and confession; by proclaiming the gospel of God’s redemptive love through the Lord Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth by word and deed; by caring for all of God’s creation and actively seeking the good of everyone; by living out the realities of the Christian faith with care for one another; and by showing compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed.

We believe in the personal and bodily return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time only known to God, demands constant expectancy and, as the hope of all believers, provides motivation for godly living and service to the world. We believe that Christ will come in power and glory to gather His Church, to raise the dead, to judge the nations, and to bring His Kingdom to fulfillment. We also believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting punishment of the lost, and the everlasting blessedness of the people of God.
